The Missouri Student Survey (MSS) is conducted in even-numbered years to track risk behaviors of students in grades 6-12 attending public schools in Missouri. Participation in the survey is completely optional. The survey includes questions on alcohol, tobacco, and drug use and other behaviors that endanger health and safety. The first MSS was conducted in 2000 by Research Triangle Institute. Since 2004, the survey has been conducted jointly by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Behavioral Health (DBH), formerly the Divisions of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Comprehensive Psychiatric Services. The Missouri Institute of Mental Health analyzes the survey data and summarizes the results in the MSS reports.
